What is a Developer Consultant?

At Stride, we call our employees “developer consultants.” It’s a term that not many folks use, so let’s talk about what a developer consultant means to us at Stride.

We believe a developer is largely focused on writing code, and on dealing with issues and tasks inside the code base including architecture, technical strategy and code quality.

A consultant is a term that can mean different things to different people. In the context of software development, a consultant helps others be their best. A consultant works alongside an individual or a team to help identify strengths and areas for improvement.

At Stride, a developer consultant is responsible for a slew of things both inside the code and out. Developer consultants might do any number of things including -- but not limited to -- writing code, managing projects, creating stories, facilitating retrospectives, improving business processes, hosting iteration planning meetings, conveying the importance of paying down technical debt, playing QA/tester, and the list goes on. Further, a developer consultant strives to elevate the abilities of the teams they engage alongside.
